Okanagan Falls is BC's Newest Municipality

Post by Moops » Sat Apr 12, 2025 4:40 pm

In March, 2025, Okanagan Falls residents voted to leave Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) Area D and incorporate. The small community of 2,700 had 53% of voters say yes to incorporation, enabling the town to become a district municipality with its own mayor and council. 588 voters were in favour of incorporation, while 512 were opposed. Incorporation will come at a cost of approximately $289 per year for an average house.

The small town suffered economic hardship and growth stalled for a period of time. The elementary school's enrollment plummeted by half and the only grocery store, IGA, closed shop. In 2019, the Belich family took a chance and reopened the grocery store as Belich’s AG Foods. A welcome addition for locals and campers who had to drive to Oliver, Osoyoos or Penticton for their shopping.

The local campground was originally referred to as Okanagan Falls Provincial Park, however, it is now officially known as sx̌ʷəx̌ʷnitkʷ Provincial Park and is located within the traditional territory of the Osoyoos Indian Band.
